An Aldi customer recently stumbled upon a ‘vegetarian’ fridge filled entirely with garlic bread.
As the rise of veganism, vegetarianism, even flexitarianism (reducing meat consumption, but not cutting it out completely) ploughs on, food industry players are offering more meat-free choices.
Take Pret for example. Last year, the coffee chain opened a veggie-only cafe in London, and is launching veggie fridges across the country. A hugely popular vegan cafe from New York, meanwhile, is just about to open in Britain.
Aldi is jumping on the trend. At a store in Wakefield, Greater Manchester, you’ll find a vegetarian fridge. An admirable move. Business savvy, too, considering how many people are abstaining from meat these days.
It’s just the variety that seems to be lacking…
It was Joe Farrar who first noticed that his local Aldi’s vegetarian section is a little heavy handed with garlic bread. Mixing it up might be an idea.
Aldi responded to Joe’s tweet, calling the display “unusual”. But actually, people don’t seem all that dissatisfied.
We’ve asked Aldi whether it stocks other vegetarian items. Although given how well its garlic bread exclusive fridge is going down, it might be disinclined to bother.
