PARKERSBURG, W. Va (WTAP) – Locals showcased their best chili Saturday, all for a good cause.
The 7th annual Great Bowls of Fire chili cook off was held today at Point Park Marketplace. Twelve groups competed in various categories such as traditional, non-traditional and vegetarian chili. Contestants pulled out all the stops to try and win over the crowd, in hopes of getting the most votes for people’s choice. There was also a prize for best decorated booth.
All proceeds benefitted the sons of Italy in the Mid-Ohio Valley. The organization uses the money to give scholarships to local high school students for their college tuition. Carmine Dafeo, president of the organization says, “I think it’s a great event. Anything we can do to get people downtown and to the market place is a good thing for the city. It’s just a wonderful market, the people here are supportive of it. It’s one of these things that you see growing nationally, people like to go to a market place. You can actually buy anything you want online, but people also want experiences and coming to a market and a market palace and a cook off is that”.
The people’s choice vote was Q-Wagon BBQ, while the Blennerhassett Hotel won best traditional chili, Eagle Point won the non-traditional category and Shorty’s won vegetarian and the spirit award.
